Money on the table, early

Map affordability up front, together – no surprises, no sticker shock.

  1. Talk about the budget as a family first. Agree on what you can pay each year before your student falls in love with a school.
  2. Run each college's net price calculator. Every college that offers federal aid has one on its website. It estimates what your family would actually pay, not the sticker price.
  3. Know which forms each college needs. The FAFSA is required for federal aid. Some colleges also ask for the CSS Profile. Note each deadline.
  4. Look for merit aid. Some colleges offer scholarships to students who stand out in their applicant pool, whatever the family's income.
  5. Compare offers side by side, and ask. Once offers arrive, compare the real cost of each in the worksheet above, and ask a college to reconsider when it makes sense.
